I have a friend, whom I love very much, they like to say:
“They’re just a little guy” — “He’s/She’s a little guy” — “You’re just a little guy”
These are phrases of affection and endearment. Saying you’re a lovable scamp and what not! I would like to share some art that perfectly visualises this idea of “just a little guy”, by placing those guys in a world that is…
Too big for them.
Enter Guillaume Singelin —
As you can see, the impressive amounts of texture and colour and detail and then just... These little guys who populate the world.
Trying their best.
Living their lives.
And sometimes that works
Everyone is working and you have these scenes of breakthrough or simple process
With papers everywhere and coffee on its way
Despite their chibi proporitions it sells the emotion of the piece, of the characters. (
This skill carries into Singelin’s more conventionally proportioned work found in Loba Loca, PTSD, their Cassandra Cain Vampire story or the game Citizen Sleeper.)
And then other times... Everything goes wrong
And we just have to live with it
But even here, they're trying their hardest…
Trying to be human.
That’s what I get from this art, that emotional supply drop. Of empathy and understanding. When you see these characters in combat, in peril, it feels like a tragedy. A kind of betrayal. It’s potent.
And this is why I wanted to write this piece,
Singelin is currently building heat for their new book Frontier, which shares this art style.
I suggest you hop on this link, and check out their promotional posts on the book. If you can, support the book. It isn’t in English unfortunately, but the more interest drawn to it, perhaps it will earn itself a translation!
But as always,
Thank You For Reading.
